A typical mixer operates without issues. doesn't have a plastic smell. We cook mashed potatoes with it. There should be no issues if you beat in a basin with high sides, like a saucepan. I will mention that the model is pretty durable; my mother has used it for many years, and they bought one for me that also lasts a very long time.
