Review on πŸ“€ Sony DAVS300 DVD Home Theater Mini System (No Longer Manufactured) by Laura Lamb

Big sound, small box, big features, small solutions

This product is an amazing solution; I love home theater, but I don't like seeing a bunch of ugly flashing lights and unattractive speakers. Aesthetically, Sony borrowed from Bose et al. inspired and did a great job of packing full functionality into an attractive brushed metal box. From a video standpoint, performance is excellent and rivals many more expensive DVD solutions, partly because there is very little signal loss between the DVD section and DTS/Dolby 5.1 decoders. The remote control is easy enough to use, although the slow-motion controls are fiddly as hell. Plan for a setup that will take several hours; While the physical setup is nearly impossible to screw up, balancing the sound takes at least an hour and a half and you'll be disappointed. Fortunately, this is a "do it and forget it" task; You can also do this with any THX Optimode DVD like Fight Club, but you'll struggle with a menu system that doesn't get difficult for tasks right on the remote. Enabling a digital input (e.g. from a DirecTV receiver) is a thoughtful thing. Note that the remote *doesn't* control the cable box, which seems like an oversight in the sense that everyone needs a set-top box with a cable box anymore. Save your money and buy one of Sony's PalmPilot-sized programmable remote controls to make up for this small drawback.
