Terrible for playing records, great for decorating cakes

This is without a doubt the worst player I have ever used. I mean it has no motor, no direct drive, no belt drive. Also, it doesn't have a center spindle, so there's no guarantee that you won't get weird sound variations due to uneven rotation. Worst of all, though, is the total lack of a tonearm. I mean, the lack of a tonearm, even in a turntable, defeats the whole purpose. Ah. My wife just informed me that this is a turntable for cake decorating, not a turntable. Guilty. Hm. Let me start from the beginning. And yes. I'm Dad.* The Kootek Cake Stand is a budget-friendly option for those looking to decorate cupcakes. Made from cheap plastic with six metal bearings in a plastic support ring it will stand up to light use in the home kitchen but probably not for regular cake making. The bearings work quite well, the stand rotates easily with a gentle hand movement. I read a review of this stand where they complained that a heavy 4 tier cake wouldn't turn on it. Well, seeing the challenge, I placed a 2ft stack of bound history books on top (much more than you would expect a cake to weigh). He turned like a champ even after leaving her on things for a few hours. This cake stand is very easy to disassemble for cleaning. That's great considering decorating (and eating the cake) can get messy. The turntable consists of three parts: disk, stand and support ring, fixed with plastic clips at the bottom of the tray. A little pressure on the clips and it falls apart. I wouldn't wash the bearing ring lest I lose the bearings, but the rest should be easy to clean in the sink (don't know if it's dishwasher safe. Doubtful). It should be noted that this version of this product does not contain decoration tools. Although there is a note on the box that the tools are included. Allegedly there was a demand to sell the tray without accessories. Kootek sells several versions of this coaster with different decoration accessories. Bottom Line: If you are serious about baking and decorating cakes or baking heavy pies, go for a metal tray. It will have better bearings to allow it to turn and will be better able to withstand more intensive use. However, for the average chef and the occasional baker, this cake is a great inexpensive decorating option. Just don't try to keep a record of it.

Pros
  • Non-slip surface: Frosted plate design that prevents the cake from moving. Easy to clean with a towel and water.
Cons
  • New competitors are here
