Review on πŸš— MagnaFlow Direct-Fit Catalytic Converter 23896: Standard Grade, Federal/EPA Compliant Solution by Mike Roe

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good fit, functionality and not too complicated to install.

Fits easily on a 1992 Toyota Previa, unlike other vintage exhaust systems (e.g. screws on the muffler pipe had to be cut off). My old suspension (a 2000 OEM replacement) wasn't welded, it was attached with badly rusted bolts to a one-piece bracket that was welded to the tube. They had to be snapped off and replaced with hardware store screws, washers and nuts for two separate mounts on the Magnaflow. The front and rear pipes are well aligned. The two brackets that attach to the clothes rail weren't aligned properly, but I compensated for this by bending the clothes rail a bit to fit exactly where it was attached (don't want to emphasize where the wrong aligned bracket was). tied to a cat). It also appeared that the clothes rail was somewhat thermally isolated from the original mounting bracket with some sort of heat-resistant washers on the mounting screws that fit against the stock bracket. I haven't been able to find replacements for them and it's not clear if their absence matters - certainly I've never encountered a hot suspension issue mentioned in online forums or discussions with mechanics . Unlike the other hanger bar mount, the front Y-tube lacks the OEM's small heat shield, but Magnaflow says it's not needed as its steel conducts much less heat than the original cast iron. Hence 1 star deduction. for the offset mount, but that's not too bad, just not 100%. Hope it lasts a while. I suspect the Toyota OEM build is really well done and superior to this BUT it probably doesn't matter for my purposes. To me, the huge price premium isn't justified for a car I suspect won't hit the road in 2028. I bought Toyota gaskets and a new set of nuts that attach to the exhaust manifold studs. I don't want to go back there anytime soon because I was trying to save a few bucks. First of all, don't worry about the smoke from the new seals. I know it scared me, but it will stop soon.
