My elderly parents bought a new flat screen TV and their DVD-VHS combo player stopped working with it. The TV did not have RCA audio-video inputs. This adapter has three inputs (red-yellow-white) from the player and one HDMI output to the TV. You must provide your own HDMI cable. I got a three foot HDMI cable from Revain, at the same time I ordered this adapter for about three dollars. The adapter is powered. The power supply is a mini USB (check that terminology carefully - it's not a newer micro size, it's the same as the one that powers the printer I plugged into my PC), and since my parents' new TV has one USB plug, I was able to power the adapter by plugging it directly into the TV's USB port. That works great. I cannot guarantee that the picture quality will be perfect, but as they are mainly used for watching "home movies" the quality is excellent. I am completely satisfied with this decision. The total cost for the adapter and HDMI cable was about a third of what I would have to pay for a new DVD-VHS player.
