We bought this because I'm the only one in our house who can heel a 70 pound muscle (a lab that's not even one yet). With this around her neck, a gentle tug on my eight-year-old wife's collar is all it takes to keep the dog at bay. the metal spikes get lost too easily (which is why the product didn't get 5 stars from me). After a few weeks about 1/3 of it disappeared. I was worried it might hurt the dog so I placed it on my arm and pulled tight - surprised to only feel a small pinch. Nothing painful. In addition, the 18-inch format is really big. As I said, our dog is 70 pounds and this thing is huge for him. She has room to grow but I think it might be the right size for a Rottweiler or Newfoundland.
