Yarn: The leash itself is a cotton yarn. This is normal with occasional use. If you use it frequently, it will most likely wear out and break. But that will be enough for many hobby craftsmen or hobby farmers. If you want a tool that will last 30 years and pass it down to your kids, get a nylon cord. It was pretty easy to fill with chalk dust but even though it was supposed to be a leak proof container I left little blue circles on it. Chalk dust when I put the instrument on the floor. I would not recommend using it alone. You can lock the instrument to stay at a certain length, but this can be done by moving the lever you use to wind the string. Since it requires some movement, you can't just block it by holding it without moving the chalk line. Either way, for an occasional use tool, this is a worthwhile purchase and a nice addition to your toolbox.
