For my purposes it works great without major modifications. I have a 30 gallon fresh water tank that I wanted to clean the surface of and it works great with my back hanging filter (Tetra Whisper Power Filter). Connected easily. You don't have to use a suction cup holder. The kit included two additional rubber connectors; I used "dick" to connect to my filter. The pictures show that the transparent part is a floating skimmer - this skimmer automatically adjusts to the water level. To set the amount of "cream skimming" you need to adjust the pipe connection on the underside of the U-siphon. There are three small slots for water intake. Cover them all and you have a high-performance skimmer, but at a price; an audible "gurgling" sound you would normally hear in a fish shop. I have an open slot and my skimmer is silent. You'll know it's working if there's something resembling an air bubble in the skimmer's clear tube. This and debris will begin to build up on the edges of the skimmer. Be sure to clean it from time to time. It's very petty, but the only way this kit would be better is if it was all black; the "clear" skimmer is quite white and stands out in my planted tank.
