I bought these thinking I would have to change them often like a lot of new filter pads. But so far I'm still on my first one, I've washed it many times and it's still holding its shape. Since this filter uses a bio carrier, I take a filter pad to my sink and spray it really well with a dish sprayer (or whatever you call a mini garden hose, like wall hung sinks). Just make sure to remove the chlorinated water from it before putting it back in the filter. (I just towel dry to dry a bit)
