Review on πŸ’‘ HUION LA3 Portable USB LED Tracing Light Box with Adjustable Brightness - Ideal Tattoo Light Pad for Dimmable Illumination by Mike Modesto

Looks good, but it's not perfect - a pro's perspective

I have just received this Huion LA3 11 x 17" Light Pad. I am a professional artist. I need to trace/copy preliminary pencil and ink drawings onto Bristol and watercolor paper for the final art. I usually work at the table for animation (more on that below) but as a last resort I used my daughter's smaller and less expensive lightbar so I decided to try this surface which I feel I can work and paint on, without worrying about the pad flexing or breaking. The pad is smooth and flat over the entire work surface, with no protruding edges to catch paper or rulers. Except for a small indentation in the upper left corner where the / Off switch, which I immediately liked, prevents accidental touching of the switch ( in the daughter is such a sensitive s tablet, every time I run my hand over the board to wipe the traces of erasing, the light changes). The eyelet is just above the surface of my table. n 4 small bumpers. Another great design detail protects the board from rubbing and scratching the dirt on my drawing board. The plug fits snugly into the socket on the side of the pillow, and the cord, while not long, is long enough (about 5 feet) to reach my power strip under my desk. The light spreads evenly over the entire surface but appears to vibrate a little, as if miniature waves are running across the surface. As soon as the sheet of paper is on the pillow, I no longer see or notice the wave. If I'm working with some sort of transparency this might be an issue, but for paper-to-paper tracking it's not an issue. The light is bright enough to get the job done. I usually work on 100# Bristol sheet with 80# drawing paper underneath. I usually work from preliminary pencil sketches drawn by Blackwing Palomino Pearl, so the pencils are dark. This light is enough to copy pencils. I want it to be a little brighter. I have 3 studios. Los Angeles, New York and Connecticut. In New York and Los Angeles there are drawing tables with animation discs. The animation disc is a round, translucent disc about 18 inches in diameter that sits in a cut-out hole in a drafting table with a light underneath. The disc can rotate in the hole, so when I'm working I can rotate my drawing to the best working angle. The light below is fully adjustable from color temperature (soft white to bright white) to brightness. Actually my desk in LA has a remote controlled ceiling light as it is in a table lamp. This is my ideal work situation, but I am NOT mobile. It seems like a great option here in Connecticut. I will write again in a few weeks to add and correct this review.

Pros
  • Adjustable brightness and memory - Stepless light control with touch sensitivity is simply the best way to find the perfect lighting. It will remember your favorable brightness from the last time you used it.
Cons
  • dull packaging
