Fixed memory that had memory compatibility issues OEM

Original computer: Mid 2011 iMac 21.5 500GB system with 4GB memory (2 x 2GB stick) OS: Started with Lion but switched to Mavericks after installing My iMac works great, but there were occasional lags, especially with photo-intensive software like Lightroom and Photoshop Elements. I decided to buy 2 (4GB) flash drives to increase the storage in my system to 12GB. The memory was easy to install and I followed Apple's instructions on their website with no problems. After installation, the system booted normally, but within 48 hours I noticed that the system freezes randomly, resulting in a hard reboot. This may have happened while surfing the web or running small applications. After about a dozen hangs I started wondering if it was a compatibility issue with Lion, so I upgraded to Mavericks with no problems and the situation persisted. There was no sense or reason for the frequent freezing of the apps I made. I usually only have 2-3 tabs open in Chrome but it keeps freezing. The slats were installed horizontally next to each other, which according to Apple's website turned out to be the right method. On a whim I decided to remove the OEM memory and put the new Corsair memory in the slots where the old memory was. Problem solved. The system has been working fine for 4 days without any freezes. I have to assume there was some weird compatibility issue between the Samsung memory that was in the car when I bought it and the Corsair memory. It doesn't look like this should have been an issue as this memory is within specs. Despite that, everything works fine now and I haven't had any freezes. I've always been a PC guy and upgraded memory before moving to an iMac, so this wasn't my first purchase/install of RAM in general, it was my first on an iMac. Corsair is a solid brand and I've never had a problem with their previous memory purchases. I gave them one star for compatibility issues with Apple's own storage, but everything else works great.

Pros
  • Finally bought
Cons
  • Too stupid
