Review on Alpine Electronics HCE TCAM1 WRA 2007 Up Wrangler by Patrick Burns

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Installing the factory radio isn't as easy as I thought it would be, but it's worth it in the end.

I'm a big fan of this as the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon Recon I just got doesn't include a rear view camera. I ordered my Jeep with a 430N head unit and this unit is compatible with it but requires an adapter. The installation turned out to be MUCH more difficult than I expected, but I'm very happy with the result. FYI if you are using this with a factory stereo you will need to ask your dealer to 'flash' the stereo to enable the rear view camera options. In addition, you must order a separate adapter, which is listed in the sales information. What isn't mentioned is that due to using a non-Alpine head unit etc you'll have to do the splicing by hand. This is not a project I would take on unless you are very "handy" when it comes to working with vehicles or tools. I should have had a panel disassembly kit, some tools that many may not have, etc. In the end I am VERY VERY happy with this product but was a little surprised at how difficult it was to install. The total installation time (after almost 2 hours of thinking about the discrepancy between the instructions in the original box and the adapter to connect the cable correctly before finding the answer on the internet) was about 3-4 hours. I removed the panels very carefully, I didn't want to break anything. Access to the dashboard is fairly easy, as is the main unit. The hardest part was wiring and removing the plastic between the front and back seats.

Pros
  • An absolute legend
Cons
  • Not as thick as the other options
