. If you don't already have some of the other books by the same author or want to start your aquarium plant library at an average price then this is probably a really good choice. However, I already have The Encyclopedia of Aquarium Plants (also Hiscock) and Building a Natural Aquarium (Hiscock). I found a lot of information superfluous with the encyclopedia. On the other hand, it packs a lot of the same solid, well-explained information into a more compact paperback. If you don't already have an encyclopedia, or are looking for an introductory book (perhaps as a gift for someone just getting into the hobby), this is great value and fun reading. However, if you're already well versed in a hobby or own an encyclopedia, this might not be as helpful. Another book, Building a Natural Aquarium, was much more interesting to me (I ordered it and The Essential Guide at the same time) because it was a very different take on aquarium plants from a biotope perspective. Overall, the getting started guide is really good, with clear diagrams and very well presented information.
