Review on πŸ’‘ Cisco SFP-10G-LR= 10GBASE-LR SFP+ Module: High-Performance Networking Solution by Phillip Jaylon

Revainrating 1 out of 5

expensive long fiber

I have 4 of these Cisco fiber optic transceivers that are used to connect remote buildings on our large campus. "LR" optics are long-distance optics and intended for long-distance use over singlemode fiber, not multimode fiber. In our case, the mileage is about 650 m around the campus. Of our 4 transceivers, 1 had CRC errors and channel supply issues until it completely failed after a month (and they came from a Cisco reseller who gets them direct from the factory). ship to order). I don't know if the failure rate of LR optics is higher than others, but this is the first SFP or SFP+ I've failed on (hence my rating dropped to 4 stars). Please note that the factory warranty on it is very short. (90 days) to enable you to use the Cisco Smartnet Advanced Service. LRs get a little warm (warm to the touch even with light use). For fiber under 300m you can use cheaper LRM or SR optics. The Cisco 10G-LRM is particularly versatile as it can be used on both multimode and singlemode fiber (though not over long distances where LR can be used). Always check the Cisco documentation or their TAC to make sure you are getting the right type of fiber for your needs and that it will work with your switch. And of course, SFP support doesn't mean SFP+ support (1Gb vs 10Gb) - check your documentation! Packed LRs are quite expensive compared to the usual "Cisco-compatible" competitors, but I prefer to use Cisco-branded parts rather than risk potential incompatibility by using a third-party device, especially in applications involving high bandwidth like 10 Gb.
