Review on Sena SPH10 Bluetooth Stereo Headset / Intercom for Outdoor Sports - Black by Fred Meeks

Workaround required for tuning

I bought a pair of these headphones to use on my sailboat. Sailors call this type of device "marriage savers" because it eliminates the need for one spouse to shout instructions to the other spouse when they are on opposite ends of the boat, such as when anchored. Here are my complaints: First, the devices aren't built very well. They are made of plastic which feels a little flimsy. Second, the assembly is not very good. It's very difficult to fit the microphone into the headset and I can't attach the included rubber ear pads to the headset. Without them, the device would be quite uncomfortable. Third, the documentation is of poor quality, there are virtually no instructions on how to set up the device, e.g. B. to install rubber headphones. I didn't even have time to connect the two devices and it took over an hour to set up. Very disappointing. I sent a support request to the manufacturer and there was a problem. The support form asks for all kinds of personal information that has nothing to do with support at all, but that can likely be sold to others. I'll see what answer I get. If this is not an improvement over what I have experienced so far these items will be returned to the seller. When I fix these issues I will update my review. I hope they will work as there are very few such products on the market. Great idea, poorly implemented. UPDATE 5/2/2019. I increased my rating by two stars mainly because it took five minutes to install after solving a specific issue. My issue was with the rubber ear pads that come with the device. I finally contacted support and their advice was completely wrong. I'll explain why it doesn't work and then I'll explain how it works. These are instructions that the manufacturer must provide. Rubber earpads are stretched over a plastic frame the same size as the earcup. Carefully remove the foam pad from the earcup. You will see a small speaker with three slots. There are three corresponding protrusions on the plastic frame that holds the rubber ear cushion. Technical support said to place the plastic frame on the speaker so that the plastic tabs on the frame fit into the slots in the speaker, then turn clockwise to lock them in place. I've been trying to do this for an hour with no success. In desperation, I tried to remove the rubber pad from the plastic frame to see the tabs and line them up properly. This made it clear that the two plastic pieces just didn't fit together, and it occurred to me that the rubber pad might fit right on top of the speaker enclosure. Voila! It fits perfectly. I took the foam pad I had removed from the earcup and carefully slipped it back onto the rubber pad. I repeated the process for another earbud and the issue was resolved. I bought two of these devices with the intention of connecting them together. Pairing is detailed in the downloadable user manual - much better than the printed quick start guide that came with the device. Pairing the devices only took about 30 seconds and it worked on the first try. So now I'm in business. I still think this product is a great idea with questionable execution and very poor tech support. But the ear pads workaround helped me solve my biggest problem and now that the devices are working I think my wife and I will love them. We'll see how they hold up and if I run into any issues I'll update this review.
