I have always spent a lot of money to change the oil in my car. Laziness prevails in most situations that require physical labor. This year I decided to do what any reasonably stubborn, average non-mechanic would do: after calculating how much money I would save on this endeavor if I did it myself, I decided to head to YouTube go and find the least questionable video. how do i change the oil in my car My car: an old 2006 BMW 325i E90 (No, I've never been to JiffyLube for an oil change. That would be really bad.) The oil change wasn't difficult at all, and I did it in about an hour (including cleaning time). - which probably takes the most time). I've decided it makes sense to review the items I've purchased for this assignment in a combo email. high. See below: 1. RhinoGear 11909 RhinoRamps Vehicle Ramps (Pair, 12,000lbs gross shipping) - (I bought mine on sale at Advanced Auto Parts for $19). They are amazing and work well with a mid-size sedan or small SUV. They're great for small jobs that require getting hit by a car. RhinoRamps are very durable and safe. They also have enough grip to prevent them from slipping during use. Remember to always use wheel chocks with your RhinoRamps and that RhinoRamps are designed for use on hard, flat surfaces. Don't be the type trying to use this on a slope or muddy flat when your car is tilted 45 degrees to the side. This guy doesn't live very long.2. Mann-Filter HU 816 X Metal-Free Oil Filter ($10.50 at Revain). If your car is the same model as mine, NO, you should not use the HU 925/4 X. You need an 816 X that fits exactly. It may seem that the 925 filter is suitable, but it is not. It is too long. 925 is for later E90 models (not sure what year as I don't have one. I think one way to test this is if the oil drain plug on the underside of your car is to the side then you need 816 X. If you have a newer E90 model the oil drain plug is probably pointing down I think it's the one with the 925 filter also need to replace when changing the oil this is the only oil filter i would trust for my car if you are a bmw enthusiast looking for filters looking for answers on the 2006 325i/E90 oil filter this is it If you have read the Mann-Filter forums Made in Mexico or Germany, it doesn't matter where they are made Mann-Filter has factories in both countries and ensures that both locations meet the same quality standards, just think about it ter. How hard is it to turn? 3. Oil Filter Wrench $1 or a few years ago). I would take it to the store. It's cheaper than ordering online.4. wheel pads. I bought a YM W4194 hard rubber wedge, 8-3/4" long, 4" wide, 6" high - pack of 2 wedges for $18.88 from Revain. They're pretty durable. A lot of people complain about the smell complained. Initially I was hesitant to buy it because of the strong smell but I decided to give it a try anyway. Don't fill my garage with bad smell. I have it on one side of a closed two car garage and I can't use it at all smell. These pads worked great - even on the smooth surface of my garage floor. 7 quarters. BMW only uses certain types of oil, so you can't just put in any oil. I went with the European formula Mobil 1 0W-40 as stated. Me bought both products from Revain and spent about $27.99 for a 6 liter pack and another $7.98 for an additional liter If you are using a different type of oil, do some research before you buy wrong Oil grade will ruin your car.7. The FloTool 42003MI 16 liter waste bin is a great purchase. Despite my car's low profile, I had no problem moving this drain pan under my car (when going on Rhino ramps that don't leave much clearance). on the wall of my garage. It is also easy to transport if necessary. The container looks very durable and won't break if you accidentally drop it. The lid also closes very well. I tried turning the container on its side once it was full. 8. Hopkins FloTool Super Funnel 05034 (Revain - $5.76). You can probably get by with a regular funnel, but one of these longer funnels makes life a lot easier, especially if you need to transfer old oil into small containers before disposal. This funnel also comes in handy for pouring other liquids into containers with a small one Opening - just make sure to wash and dry thoroughly every time you use it. You don't want a residue of what you use contaminating everything you will use for the next one.9. Towel shop ($3-5 depending on how much you get and where you buy them). I recommend buying them in store. It will cost you much less than if you bought them online.10. Ratchet and socket wrench at 17. If you're trying to change the oil yourself, you should already have a set of ratchets that you're probably using for other purposes. You can independently calculate the cost of all materials. Minus the cost of everything you only buy once, my total cost was about $48 (filter, oil). When you take your BMW to a dealer you can see how much money you can save by changing the oil yourself. I also recommend wearing gloves. Don't bother with a Creeper if you have the same car as me. The car is too low so you won't have enough room to use the creeper if you just mount it on the RhinoRamps. I'm not a mechanic or car expert, so I won't go into the details of each step. oil change process. DISCLAIMER: How you change your oil is entirely up to you. I am not responsible for any accidents or mistakes you make in any process you choose to follow. Here's a brief description of what you need to do (on a flat, non-slip surface): 1. Slowly place your car onto the RhinoRamps.2. Activate the emergency brake.3. Place the wheel chocks firmly and securely behind the rear wheels.4. Give your engine enough time to cool down so you don't burn yourself.5. Open the hood.6. Open the engine oil cap on your engine (the one with Castrol).7. Unscrew the oil filter cover with the oil filter wrench.8. Remove and discard the old filter.9. Replace gasket and O-ring on oil filter cover.10. Lubricate the oil filter seal and O-ring with old or new oil.11. Reinstall the oil filter cap and tighten with an oil filter wrench.12. Slide the car under the car and locate the oil drain plug.13. Loosen the drain plug with a ratchet.14. As soon as you see the oil dripping, place a drain pan under it, unscrew the screw and drain the remaining oil.15. After draining the oil (slow dripping), tighten the drain plug with a ratchet.16. Pull yourself and the oil pan out from under the car.17. Use a funnel to slowly pour every 7 liters of oil into the engine oil compartment (the one marked Castrol).18. Close the engine oil compartment.19. Push it back in to check for leaks. 20. Close the hood (make sure you haven't left anything on the engine and reset everything before doing this).21. Start the car and let it run for a few minutes. Lift the visor to ensure no oil spills. 22. Remove wheel chocks.23. Release the emergency brake and slowly drive away from the RhinoRamps.24. Reset the oil change indicator. 25. Pour the old oil into the empty containers using a funnel and empty oil containers. 26. Take the old oil containers to your local auto parts store and discard the old oil. Congratulations! You have successfully performed an oil change on your 2006 BMW 325i E90. There are tons of videos on YouTube showing how to change the oil in a BMW. I would suggest looking at a few before trying the process. There is also a video on resetting the oil warning light after an oil change. It's pretty easy. Good luck and always keep safety first.
