The range finder works at fairly short ranges eg 100 yards. I've found a large hard surface to wobble. However, I had to be very still to photograph small objects (like a tree or a neighbor's sheep). Most of the time I've found that the rangefinder doesn't show anything at 200 yards or more. examples. Hovering 400 yards over the side of a barn returns a reading; Sheep grazing near the same barn will not have their readings returned. When focusing on a tree (9 inch diameter) at the end of the clearing I was hunting in (about 210 yards), no reading was returned. I had to place the range finder on a hard surface and focus on a very large tree (2ft diameter) to get a reading. I still have a range finder and can give it to my grandson to play with - I've replaced it with a Leupold which I'm happy with.
