Review on 🗺️ Garmin nüvi 1200 GPS Navigator: Compact 3.5-Inch Portable Device for Effortless Navigation by Shane Popo

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Very good device: Portable DVD player

I can understand that some people expect a lot from a GPS that costs over a hundred dollars. Okay, but for those who want to open the box, pop the device in their car and go, that's more than fine. My old Garmin was black and white, small and high tech since you had to install software on your computer and then download maps to the device using the USB cable that Garmin back then supplied. If you had or bought this cable, you can use it to register your nüvi 1200 and possibly get new firmware from Garmin. But if you're looking for map updates, be aware that a new map update CD or download from the internet (I'd grab the CD in case your computer crashes) costs a lot more than I expected. So much so that I think I'll just let this device become obsolete and then buy a new one with updated maps. Let's get back to this unit. This thing is incredibly easy to use. All you have to do is use the touchscreen to choose between Favorites, POIs, etc. to start where you want to go. The process is as intuitive as it gets. Also, the level of difficulty is a few notches higher than my senior. This way you can find golf courses and other similar destinations that you absolutely had to have an address with my old one. As an address, almost all GPS devices require an address that uses the actual city where the destination is located. For example, if you're looking up an address in Chicago for a location that's actually in the suburbs of Chicago, you're likely to have trouble entering that destination into your device. Once you enter the address, just go. If you get stuck in traffic, you can go back one screen and select the detour icon. More tech-savvy people can go down a few menu levels and choose not to drive on toll roads or even highways if they want to take the most scenic route. You can even choose the route that your Garmin device thinks is the greenest. Good for those trying to save the environment or money, or maybe both. I would buy it again. And I wouldn't worry too much about map updates.

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
