I couldn't get rid of the smell after washing. I don't use them for seat belts - I have two of these that I use on shoulder straps on bags (which we pack with heavy items). It's more comfortable than no padding, but I wish they were a little softer. The first was fine after washing and some alterations, but the second curled up a lot during the wash. I ended up cutting off a piece of one of the seams (one of the end seams which shouldn't be as strong / don't constantly pull during use) and with the tip of a pencil unrolled the inner alloy and maneuvered it lying flat as before as I washed it have. It worked very well. Then I just sewed the incision/seam.
