You need to play with them a bit before you put them in the lanterns. I only hung a dozen lanterns, but if I were doing a large installation it would be important to tinker with it beforehand. Initially we had to twist and unwrap several bulbs multiple times - we thought some of them were defective. After a few tries we got both working.
