We use this activated carbon in our emergency water treatment system. This is the best price we can find for coal pellets. While we're not concerned about absorbing ammonia from our pond, it's an added bonus. This should also work in freshwater aquariums.

I have a bag of this material on top of both of my biofilters in my pond. The idea is to neutralize the nitrites produced by the fish in my pond. Of course, I probably have too many fish in the pond, but I'm not going to kill a few. As koi and goldfish get bigger, their food gets bigger too. My two biofilters can handle most of this, along with a nitrite treatment. I really didn't notice any improvement with this charcoal.
