🔌 Efficient DB9 Serial Converter with Adapter Chipset for Windows Review

Used as serial port adapter on Elecraft K3 to connect to computer USB port. After trying unsuccessfully to get the N1MM+ to work with the Prolific chipset, I found that this FTDI chipset worked right out of the box. The price is reasonable too.

Since I already had the FTDI driver installed it was plug n play with no issues. The serial number that the chip reports to Device Manager doesn't show up as a known fake in Google search, and the FTDI driver I installed (v2.12.36.1, downloaded directly from ftdi.com) works fine.

I was trying to connect to a sound level meter with an RS232/DB9 port. This cable worked with the "Serial" app from the Apple App Store. (Also worked with another serial terminal app from their store.) No additional downloads required. The serial application (and the other application) already knew how to use the cable. I have an iMac desktop with Big Sur OS (11.x).

I didn't have to download any additional drivers. The scales are currently using older Windows 7 computers and have had no detection issues. Communication is reliable and fast. A total of 20 cables were purchased due to the ease of installation. We use it for scales in a processing plant where everything has to run smoothly. .Definitely recommend, affordable and reliable.

After several unsuccessful attempts to find the right product to connect my laptop to my TV this worked. Even though my laptop didn't have a floppy drive, I was able to easily find drivers online and install them quickly. As soon as I connected the cable to the TV, my display immediately mirrored the laptop screen. I also installed drivers on other laptops for future use.

One cable allows multiple laptops to use push-to-talk with multiple programs in digital mode. My older transceiver interface (Rigblaster PRO) required RTS for PTT confirmation and this cable worked fine on Windows 7 and Windows 10. It was recognized quickly on both machines and was stable from boot to boot. The Windows 7 computer searched the internet for drivers but seemed to find them ok without any intervention. Win 10 installed directly. FTDI is the only way out.

I bought this to connect modern Macbooks to data center serial ports - so it was important that the chipset came with Mac drivers out of the box - and this cable wasn't disappointing Note that you may also need a null modem cable or adapter depending on what pins your device expects - it would be nice if they had a null modem version built in, but by no means breaking the terms.

I've been using it for about a month and found it stopped working tonight. I checked both ends of the device to make sure it was still connected and the 9 pin end almost burned my hand. Fortunately, my computer and device were not damaged. I've noticed some clear/white goo coming out of the top of the port. I'm just glad it didn't burn down my house. I replaced it with another model cord I had lying around and the other cord didn't heat up at all. Buyer Warning.
