The connector may not work well with the way they packaged the drive.

I had three of these drives and unfortunately they all had the same problem: the cable doesn't fit properly and at some point the connection falls into the housing and you lose the drive. If you don't know how to disassemble the drive to remove the connector that fell in, you will lose the drive. You will see it starts because the cable is not properly connected. The device then has trouble finding the drive unless you tilt the cable. Then you try different cables, but they all give the same…

These things usually don't last very long on me. Tend to drop them. This one seems up to the task, better built than the ones I've had before. Have high hopes and higher expectations.
