They are insulated. We didn't want anything that could keep us warm while hiking in warm weather. This will not suit us since we live in the desert. So the boot is tough. . It doesn't go through the sole, but metal (yes, those are metal ice axes) won't hit the ground unless you seriously wear down the soles of the boot themselves. Which, frankly, would be impressive if you did. The only complaint is that the upper doesn't compress well and is just snug enough, but not firm enough (if that makes sense) to rub against the skin and irritate or even damage the skin of the foot where the upper chafed is.
