Compostable! for Knives

These are excellent disposable tools. They feel good in the hand, they're reasonably proportioned, they're not particularly fragile or brittle (prone to breaking like plastic). But the best thing about them is that they don't immediately become food for plastic landfills. I'm not 100% sure why CoVID-19 pushed me towards single-use plates, cups and cutlery. Idleness? May be. General tiredness? Maybe. Half the wait for the next surprise of 2020 is for our dishwashers to get up and pounce on us? I

Depending on the cost of heating hot water in your area, washing cutlery may be more expensive than using those plastic spoons, knives and forks. The quality is good: strong, uniform. So good it's tempting to reuse them; not the kind you would throw away with dirty paper plates. And - you get a lot for a seemingly cheap price (it was an evaluation kit). Ecological choice with some caveats

What does compostability mean? This simply means that when you add them to your compost pile, don't expect them to decompose quickly. Compostable plastic usually needs to be shredded first to allow microbes to break it down in a reasonable amount of time. Attempting to compost them at home will likely result in the flatware sitting in your compost pile for a year or two. Commercial establishments shred or shred compostable plastic so it can decompose in a reasonable amount of time. But…
