Ecological choice with some caveats

What does compostability mean? This simply means that when you add them to your compost pile, don't expect them to decompose quickly. Compostable plastic usually needs to be shredded first to allow microbes to break it down in a reasonable amount of time. Attempting to compost them at home will likely result in the flatware sitting in your compost pile for a year or two. Commercial establishments shred or shred compostable plastic so it can decompose in a reasonable amount of time. But compostable also means biodegradable with no toxic residue, so it's a much better alternative to regular plastic cutlery. They are amazingly durable. We used them to eat breaded chicken breasts the first night and they have held up well, being able to actually slice open a chicken without bending, breaking or warping like most plastic utensils do . The spoons are a little flat but functional. At Revain's current price of $25 per box, you're getting about 16 cents per set, which is more than you'd pay for regular plastic dinnerware, but not so much that the price is unreasonable. Worth a few cents more per set to have something better for the planet.
