Finally a decent answering machine!

I bought this machine because I wanted it to be of good quality, easy to use and decent to look at. I've been using it for over 6 months now and I find it to be a great little auto responder. The most difficult setting is the CLOCK. Be patient, experiment a little, keep trying, and in the end you will succeed. Sometimes it's easy, sometimes not. Complete and easy to read instruction manuals The instruction manual folds out large, the printing is clear and even better, the instructions are well…

workable but disappointing

I am not very happy with this machine. My main complaint is that after the first viewing, the message is naturally numbered and saved. Let's say I have seven messages on the device, my last message is saved as number eight. If I want to listen to the last message again, I press play and message number one plays first. I have to press "Skip" seven times to get to the latest post. Pretty annoying when you want to store multiple messages on one machine. Also, there is no other way to make a backup

Easy to install, easy to use Auto-response

I had a 4 year old previous version from AT&T and it worked great. So when I needed a new one as a gift for a relative, it was a no-brainer. Yes, you must use the DSL line filters that come with your DSL service, but they already had a filter so all you had to do was click on it. I read the instructions, of course, but after I set it up, a local teenager came by. to do this, overwrote the message, played new messages, deleted the useless ones and left. It was so obvious to electronics kids…

Great answering machine at a great price

After years of using a phone with a built in answering machine, I recently purchased a separate phone and 1738 answering machine which digitally records up to 40 minutes of calls. I paid $18 for this device; good price. The human engineering of 1738 is excellent. For example, to set the day of the week, press the button repeatedly until the correct day of the week is announced. Other setup steps are similar. I like the remote access with Call Saver to take calls on the go. You can choose your…

Great value for money

I totally agree with Jack Berry's detailed review. Here's a quick addition to what I didn't focus on. I chose the 1738 not because it was AT&T, but because after so many years almost all AMs, regardless of brand, shared the same features; They differ mainly in the recording time and the need for a backup battery. The sound quality has risen to the level of an inferior cassette no matter what time I've been listening in people's homes. If I needed to archive a phone message, I could digitize it…
