Great for catching fireflies

This is the perfect summer toy. My kids loved catching and releasing file flies, and they fold up for easy portability on out-of-town trips!

It is important to note that this is a MINI for residential use

The description really says this is a Mini. I just didn't realize how small it was. That would be fine for a caterpillar/butterfly. We had 5 and I should have gotten more. 5 butterflies couldn't fit there.

  • GOLS certified

My would-be entomologist in heaven

My son loves catching bugs. This was problematic on camping trips when trying to take them home or carry them forever. Enter this little gem. It's small and attaches directly to his backpack. He can fish for pleasure and easily finds a spot for his new friends. It is lightweight and easy to fold for storage. I am very happy that I have this solution.

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly

Too small to breed butterflies

It was much smaller than I expected. I got this because I ended up with 4 caterpillar cups instead of 2 (20 instead of 10). If you have an insect themed butterfly garden and would like something similar in size, know that it is about 1/3 this size. This seems to be done so the child can catch an animal or two from the garden and watch them for an hour. or two and then let her go. For growing caterpillars in groups of 5 pieces is too small.

  • Good thing

Great pop up spot for butterflies

Great pop up spot for butterflies, moths, mantises, wasps and other flying insects. I teach a summer school on bugs and spiders for elementary and middle school students. In the weeks leading up to class, I scout the local trails for various insects to bring back and show the students. These pop-up habitats are ideal for temporarily placing various insects so students can observe them up close, and are large enough to accommodate a small potted plant or other food source, climbing branches, a…

Not suitable for keeping caterpillars as they turn into butterflies.

I bought this because I need a habitat where I can observe the life cycle of monarch butterflies from caterpillar to butterfly. What I found was that although I provided the caterpillars with long branches to attach their pupae to, they all made it to the inside of the habitat cover and dangled from there, making it difficult to 1) add new milkweed leaves, to feed the remaining caterpillars and 2) it is difficult to release the resulting butterflies without disturbing the remaining pupa…
