Speak & spell was the first educational toy designed to help children learn to spell over 200 commonly misspelled words using a speech synthesizer. For ages 7 & up. Includes 3 AA batteries. At any point, if the Speak & Spell does not “turn on” reactivate by pressing the tiny “Reset” button on the back of the tablet (near the Try Me Pull tab). Ensure batteries are inserted first.

I love this piece of nostalgia!

To be honest. I bought it more for myself than for my child. I'm so excited about this trip down memory lane. Exactly as I remember. It's a little tricky with a non-QWERTY keyboard, but who cares. It's about alphabet recognition and spelling. i am a lucky girl My four year old will appreciate it eventually. 🤣

Nostalgia! Note the RESET BUTTON on the back.

Brings back so many memories. Mine was apparently DOA (dead on arrival) too, but then I noticed a tiny RESET BUTTON next to the slot you pull the white tab out of at the back. I used a small screwdriver and pressed the button for a few seconds, turned it back and pressed the ON button and it worked. Neither the operating instructions nor the packaging say anything about this. Hope this helps someone else.

comparison with the original.

Like any other old game or toy that has been remastered by Basic Fun, it works 90% of the time. The front end is identical in look, feel, and size. But the new version is a full quarter of an inch thicker. The digitized voice is different (but not clearer) and the opening phrase differs from the original. But with the display a complete failure. This is a backlit green LCD with much larger numbers instead of the old vacuum fluorescent display. If you don't look at it directly, you can't read…

Made in China, poor quality, broke quickly

We bought this item and gave it as a Christmas gift. A little over a month after purchase and to be honest the sound went from normal to very very quiet after a few uses. We changed the batteries and nothing changed. We have a Speak N Math that we used from Goodwill, a Texas Instruments original in the 80's. It still works great even after being dropped a few times by small children. Comparing them side-by-side the overall look of the new one seems very similar, although the readable screen…

Just like the original (good and bad)

Brings back so many memories! It's just like Speak & Spell which I used for hours. Ah, nostalgia! My kids were instantly addicted to it, and like me as a kid, they liked the Mystery Word game (aka Hangman) the most. In that sense it's a hit. I'm sure there's a $0.99 app that does the same thing, but it would be cool to leave them in the car or pull them out if I don't want them to get lost in the vortex of screen time. That being said, I think it needs some updates for today's generation.1. The
