  • The developers obviously didn't understand why DOOM (2022) was a success. I will single out, in my opinion, the most catchy theses of this wonderful game. First, promotion around the world. The world felt like one whole: the beginning of the next level almost always looked like the end of the previous one, even if you were moving in an elevator, through a portal to hell, or passing a section of the map on a train. The feeling that you are exploring the same complex on Mars did not go away. Secondly, the feeling of the world around you and immersion in it. In addition to the integrity of the level design of locations, the visual design and rationale for this level design is also very important. If the player has to jump over some objects, he understands why they are there and why he jumps over them. Usually these are some kind of balconies of different levels of the Martian complex or rocks in hell. In general, each arena is subjected to logical thinking, and it can look understandable even outside the context of the gameplay. All locations in DOOM (2022) are poorly lit, look as gloomy as possible and put pressure on the player with all their might. Thirdly, the progression of the player, which for the most part worked for psychology. Any weapon upgrades the player found would allow them to simply deal damage in new ways. It didn't matter to the demons what exactly they were hit with - it was enough just to inflict a certain amount of damage to each specific type, so the player himself chose the most effective or aesthetically pleasing weapon for himself and used it. He could choose the upgrade for a particular gun that he likes, or switch between them depending on the situation. In addition to the psychological progression, there were also noticeable improvements in the style of metroidvania, when the player received, for example, a second jump. And on all these three points, DOOM Eternal turns out to be much worse.

  • World structure. Unlike DOOM (2022), there is now no narrative integrity. We have a Tower of Guardians (hello Destiny) that sends the player through the portal to different planets and different parts of hell, so we get absolutely unrelated missions and room for DLC - it's very convenient to add new levels when they are not must be in no way connected to the rest of the game. On the one hand, here we get a variety of visual environments: a metropolis on Earth captured by demons, some temples in snow-capped mountains, completely different regions of hell. On the other hand, the sense of story progression is lost entirely. Disgusting level design. Even those who defend the game laugh at him. A copy of super mario? Seriously? You go to what seems to be hell, and there are spinning fire poles, on which the doomslayer, like a damn stripper, must jump and spin, jump through fire rings like a tiger in a circus, oh yes, there are also yellow turnstiles placed throughout the game in the most inappropriate places, but what is there, sometimes just hanging in the air, the doomslayer is now a turnikman, did the developers outplay the prince of persia? Why the hell are these poisonous yellow horizontal bars just hanging in the air everywhere? As it was in DOOM 2022: I reached the reactor, and to get to the laboratory under its roof, I need to carefully jump over the balconies and crawl through the ventilation shafts. I can also activate some mechanisms and then climb even higher using their manipulators. As in DOOM Eternal: I jumped on floating super mario platforms over the abyss, I guess I did a good job teleporting back to the Tower. The problem with level design here is not that it's bad in and of itself. Some parkour sections are quite interesting and give some challenge. The only problem is that it is not explained in any way and does not fit into the world. All flying just because they can, the platforms look alien to this game.
