This repaired the threads on my 250R crankshaft flawlessly. Filed down the mushroom caused by the magneto puller and ran it through. Would definitely recommend to anyone.
Pros
Needed to clean some paint out of some lug bolts. The tool worked well
Cons
Requires additional cleaning and care to maintain longevity
While shipping was a little slow, the steelman chased the threads on four wheel studs in ten minutes. It was worth the wait. I’m glad I did not have to replace the studs. That would have taken hours. Great product.
Pros
Time-Saving: By allowing you to quickly and easily fix damaged threads, the Steelman Metric Split Die Thread Chaser can save you valuable time and keep you from having to replace otherwise perfectly good parts
Cons
Not recommended for mobile repairs or roadside assistance
I am usually cheap but I will pay premium for a good tool. the tool is well worth the money and saved my butt big-time. ( 1/2 my studs on a truck had bad messed up the threads.). I did not use a socket because it let the halves be a little loose and did not work as well, I used a big vise grips and it works perfect every time. Very pleased
Pros
Hardened steel - made of heat-treated and hardened skd11 high carbon and chromium alloy steel
Cons
Can be time-consuming to use in a busy shop environment
I was able to repair a damaged lug bolt on a car that otherwise would have had me tearing apart my suspension or taking a grinder to it in order to replace. Really cool design that saved the day.
This really saved me. I used it to straighten a wheel stud on my Honda. The mechanic had put the lug on and managed to cross thread it! The Steelman saved me a trip back to have the stud repaired. A little pricy but way worth it. Very glad I purchased this tool.
Pros
Thread size - tool fits m12-1.50 metric threaded bolts and fasteners on cars, trucks, etc.
Cons
Can cause damage to the tool itself if used improperly or too aggressively
This die is for repairing damaged threads. It's two piece design allows placement on good threads and then working into the damaged thread. This will straighten damaged threads "almost" perfectly. A regular thread die is still required to clean up the damaged thread totally. If should be used first in conjunction with the regular die but may work well enough on its own. Be sure to use some oil to keep from galling damaged threads with use.
I need to fix a small area on a rear lug nut. It took a couple of times but the threader allowed the stripped lug to restore to use again. Good for quick refinish but I would not recommend threading an entire lug nut.
Pros
Easy to Use
Cons
May require additional tools or equipment for proper use
The last time the Dealership rotated the tires on my Ford Focus, one of the lug nuts was crossed threaded on the install. On the Ford Focus you can't replace the Stud, you have to replace the whole hub.I took the advice of another review and used the tool starting at the base of the stud with the tire removed, used an adjustable wrench, and slowly backed the nut off of the stud. Another pass later (just to make sure) and I was done. This tool saved me from replacing a whole hub. It's awesome.
Pros
The Steelman Metric Split Die Thread Chaser is designed to repair a wide range of wheel studs and bolts, making it a versatile tool for any mechanic or DIY enthusiast
Cons
Not suitable for use on plastic or polymeric materials
This Split Die saved my butt. I did not realize until too late that the threaded shaft was 1/2-20 not 1/2-13 until I had cross threaded a few turns on my boats steering mechanism. Fortunately there were still several undamaged threads but not at the end of the shaft. How could I know where to start rethreading so it would line up with the undamaged thread. This 2 piece rethreading die solves that problem because you can open the die and position it where the threads are good and use the die…
Pros
These don't cut as deep as necessary but can be followed up with regular die
Cons
Not effective for heavily damaged or corroded threads
