Latest review of a great book

This is a great book that everyone should read. I hope the Holocaust will never happen again. We need more books like this so that all people know about the horrors of the Nazi concentration camps.

Pros
  • The story of the holocaust through the eyes of an innocent son of a Nazi leader... the ending just broke my heart :(
Cons
  • Minimizes the horror of the Holocaust by portraying it through the eyes of a child.

Tragedy: never again

History student while studying World War II. Comparison of the world of yesterday with the present. The question is, has anything really changed?

Pros
  • The book was made into a highly successful film, meaning readers can enjoy the story in a variety of formats.
Cons
  • Inappropriate use of historical tragedy

History comes alive!

To avoid repeating mistakes, it is so important to shake off the dust and reveal the realities of the past. Excellent book! Well done with powerful dialogue and alluring, diverse characters. This is a lesson for young and old readers. As an educator, I believe this book is appropriate for an audience of elementary and high school students. Applause for the author.

Pros
  • The novel is beautifully written and includes vivid descriptions that immerse the reader in the world of the story.
Cons
  • Does not provide precise historical context

Great for my 6th grade story

This book was good in many ways. It made the reader feel like they were there as they read and felt the characters. I used this book to read aloud in 6th grade history class. They really enjoyed it along with the activities and the videos we watched while doing it. This enabled them to better understand the Holocaust.

Pros
  • Incredibly touching and difficult to read. Innocence combined with the horror of hate! Worth reading though.
Cons
  • Romanticizes Nazi Germany

The boy in the striped pajamas...

This book was heartbreaking. I'm glad my class read this book because it was educational and offered a different perspective on the Holocaust. This book is very important for drawing conclusions, so I recommend it for 12/13+. My favorite part of the book has to be the ending that made me cry. The ending felt so drawn out but so abrupt that I felt like they were squeezing my chest. I liked this book and I think others did too.

Pros
  • One of my favourites
Cons
  • Disrespect for the victims and their families

good story..... in my opinion.

I hate to say that about the Holocaust book, but it was good and in many ways the descriptions of the events made you feel like you were there. I cried at the end, it was very sad

Pros
  • I haven't read the book yet as I ordered it for my daughter. She likes to read good books
Cons
  • Toys with audience emotions

Terrible book, my verdict

This is a Holocaust book that makes you feel bad about a Nazi family. I'm not sure what else to say, but if you need more, be aware that most Holocaust education bodies and memorial museums advise against using this book.

Pros
  • The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a great book for educators to use in their classrooms to talk about the Holocaust and other issues related to displacement, persecution and genocide.
Cons
  • Reduces the Holocaust to one plot point

Boy in striped pajamas

What a good story! Told almost entirely from the point of view of a young boy, we see the world of the concentration camp in clear, dark detail. I wouldn't recommend it to young children who are unfamiliar with the Holocaust, but I believe it should be almost a must-read for anyone interested in this particular period in our world's history.

Pros
  • This book was slow at first (for me) but once you get into it you won't be able to put it down! I liked it very much!
Cons
  • Glorifies the Nazi propaganda machinery

thought provoking and frightening

This book shows how easily people can turn into monsters if they believe what they are told and the authorities make them afraid of others. Important reading. It also shows that we are not born hating others - this is a behavior that we have learned.

Pros
  • Excellent book. Shocking ending.
Cons
  • Perpetuates harmful myths about the WWII era

A sad story about WWII that people don't seem to notice

People might not like this book for the imagery or literal meaning of "poorly written, little child can't speak like an adult" from a story about children in World War II. But this book is sad for everyone, and it's a story to read and remember because it shouldn't have happened to anyone.

Pros
  • My son should have read this book. He really enjoyed it. would recommend
Cons
  • Whitewash the Nazi war crimes

Surprising, but also heartbreaking.

This book is a must for any class studying World War II or the Holocaust. We started reading this for our eighth grade reading class and I wasn't expecting much but it has to be one of my favorite books now. There was a lot of character development and the characters are so likable. Her behavior was very believable. For example, Bruno and Gretel, brother and sister, fight all the time, but actually they love each other very much. It also strongly demonstrated the child's innocence to what was…

Pros
  • Great book with an exciting plot. It could happen.
Cons
  • Insensitive portrayal of the Holocaust

The saddest book I've ever read

I loved the innocent relationship and friendship the two boys had and that should be reflected in the rest of the world today. The book is of course very good and well written, but very sad. It made me cry.

Pros
  • The book does an excellent job of presenting the horrors of the Holocaust to young readers in an accessible and emotionally meaningful way.
Cons
  • Fetishizes Nazi iconography

Ridiculous and insulting act

Plot (spoilers): A boy who lives near the death camp (his father is the camp commandant) becomes friends with a Jewish boy who lives in the death camp. He regularly and openly visits his new Jewish friend through the barbed wire (as if the guards would allow it) and at one point gets confused by his friend's thinness, but never realizes that terrible things are happening. The Jewish boy says nothing to correct his friend's stupidity, but makes vague remarks about his dire situation. The fool…

Pros
  • Excellent book! Never read this perspective on the Holocaust
Cons
  • Gives a false impression of life during the Holocaust

AuthorWords and characters so well written Sad in places but thought provoking reading Everyone should read this and never forget that I am a matured adult

Cons
  • Helps to ignore historical events

Innocent among evil

Bruno and Shmuel, two boys on the other side of the fence. Bruno and his innocence are unaware of the evil brewing on the other side of the fence. All he knows is that they all wear the same pajamas. He wants to be just like Shmuel.

Pros
  • Gave it to a 14 year old who was very happy with it.
Cons
  • I wish I could give this book a 0 star rating. This book should never have seen the light of day.

The year is 1943 and Bruno, a nine-year-old boy, is living in Berlin with his parents and older sister Gretel when the Fury comes over for dinner and the family has to move out-with. Bruno is unhappy with this until he meets Shmuel, a boy his age sitting behind a wire fence wearing striped pajamas. The two boys soon become good friends and see each other almost daily until Bruno explores the fence. It is a short novel but filled with dread from the start as the reader knows a reality that Bruno

Pros
  • The ending is heartbreaking. Absolutely not expected.
Cons
  • Minimizes the atrocities committed during the Holocaust.

Nazis and their friends are bad.

World War happened. Various Americans fell fighting the Nazis. The Holocaust happened. There is no opposing view on these tragedies proposed in the state of Texas in October 2021. My younger students agree.

Pros
  • I love the movie and the book was good too. Story
Cons
  • Unnecessarily reduces the difficulty of historical events

Missing/duplicate pages

As some other people have mentioned, the pages in my copy are shaky. It goes up to 154, then it starts again from 91 to 154. So the end of the book is missing. Luckily I noticed that before reading it, otherwise I would have been very annoyed. Ha! This rating is based on physical quality, not content.

Pros
  • A beautiful but heartbreaking story. I highly recommend this book.
Cons
  • Uses the suffering of real people

Spine stands up and is torn, pages 1-4 are missing

The lid was raised and could be glued on, which I can take. But the lack of 1-4 pages is unacceptable. This book was rated "good". It was not good. It wasn't even "acceptable".

Pros
  • Such a wonderful book and film. I can't imagine how anyone survived the Holocaust!
Cons
  • Erases the historical context of World War II

Revainrating 4 out of 5

The book is in good condition, terrible plot.

The book I ordered arrived on time and in good condition. I have no complaints about the most objective book. As a literary text, it's terrible. The grammar and use of images is simple and obnoxious, and the main subject requires background information not provided in the book in order to understand the text clearly. As a book, it generally sucks. It's meant to give a more human perspective on those affected by the Holocaust, instead it's fluid and robotic. Not my favorite book

Pros
  • As touching as the book is, it probably doesn't compare to the real horrors that took place in the concentration camps.
Cons
  • Uses historical horror for entertainment purposes.
