Hard sponge but definitely not a real sponge, it's man-made. What is not clear in the description. However, it works well and no longer smells like poof after a few uses. I reduced the amount of shower gel I used a lot, so I saved some money that way. Also the perfect cleanser for washing my toddler's hair in the bath as it doesn't stop so much that I can wash the soap out of his hair without tears. That's a win in my book!

I am very disappointed with this sponge. On the second use it started breaking into small pieces. On the fourth day, the sponge split so badly that it fell apart completely. Maybe he was just so terribly old that he collapsed. I liked the rope they used for the handle and it's the perfect size, but. Do not buy this sponge. This is a huge waste of money. Very sad.

I honestly don't know how often I have to change bath sponges. but this sponge is beginning to fall apart. It still works but a piece broke off yesterday and I expect it to continue to deteriorate. I don't even use it every time I shower. It's still better than other sponges I've bought (set of 3 luxury 100% natural spas, Egyptian organic bath washcloth, shower sponge, body scrub that removes dead skin), but I'm still looking for something similar was younger then.

UPDATE (May 2019): Got a new sponge on a subscription and saved up and I'm very disappointed that he's very pleased with it differs from what I received, therefore downgrading from 5 stars. The new one was very stiff and uncomfortable and it cracked and fell apart so much after 3 uses that I had to throw it out.
