Looks good from the outside but isn't accurate especially in the car

I've compared it to the compass app on our phone via GPS and to our car compass and it's been off for about 30 years % every time. Interference from other nearby electrical objects seems to affect accuracy.

Pros
  • Free for educational purposes
Cons
  • I vaguely remember

A good basic compass for general orientation.

Good cheap compass. Made in Taiwan. Should be 4-5 dollars. This is a working compass. Good for occasional use. The plastic base is a little flimsy so I doubt its durability. It's good to drop the package if you just want to find a base NE-SW. Designed for use with maps. It would be better if the base was made of thicker plastic. Bought for hiking.

Pros
  • Few competitors

  • Almost never

Q: Does moss grow on the south side of trees?

I can't express love in relation to an inanimate object. This is an excellent compass. Lots of useful attributes that everyone should have in their hiking bag, glove compartment and hiking backpack. Don't leave home without it. Anyone can master land navigation with this excellent high resolution compass and map; It's challenging and fun. A: South of the equator and in the Alaskan rainforests.

Good no frills compass

My son is losing them faster than I can buy them for my Boy Scout set. If you're new to navigation or want to have extra gear in your car in case of an emergency, this is a great little compass. I have a much more expensive one for my own wildlife kit, but the Coughlin compass was my starting compass and it has served me well. I bought one for each of my kids when we go camping and I always make photocopies of the REAL map of the area because GPS and cell phones are off!

Simple compass, inexpensive but accurate and reliable.

Was looking for a pair of inexpensive compasses to teach children to orienteer. I bought two. When I placed the order I was concerned that they might be of poor quality or sloppily assembled. However, everything looks and feels solid and precise. The dial turns smoothly - not too loose and not too tight. The arrow moves smoothly to find magnetic north. This version does not have a declination adjustment to compensate for the difference between True North and Magnetic North. That's a nice…

These bad reviews are haters. This item is perfect.

Some people who are more addicted to 🧭 than me have left pretty harsh reviews on this product. 1st: Costs just over $5 and is perfect for what the basic compass is used for. If you want something more sophisticated, buy something more complex and put more money into it. 2nd: It points north as it should in the coma. 3: There is liquid in it. The description says it's wetted with liquid and some people expect the whole thing to float in water. But if you look, you see liquid in the middle of…

Great compass at an affordable price

Good quality for the price. In case you didn't know, this is an inexpensive compass. However, it has a liquid-filled center, which makes a big difference when choosing a compass. The liquid helps stabilize the needle. The liquid does not freeze, but sometimes forms bubbles that usually do not interfere with the movement of the needle. The needle is magnetized and points north every time. This ring, marked with degrees from 0° to 360°, surrounds the outer edge of the needle capsule. The smaller…

Ideal for children learning basic map and compass skills.

Purchased several for group orienteering training from our Federation of North American Explorers. This is a good basic compass. A little big for younger boys to comfortably hold in one hand but suitable for older boys adults etc. Handy to have a drawstring so you don't have to hold it in your hands or put it in your pockets when you want to do it that it's nearby but not currently needed. Useful for measuring distances on a map to teach boys how to use a map and compass. The display is easy to
