I looked under the gap and took out the two feathers that were there. Removing those two springs made the noise go away (somewhat), so I attached the hooks under the spacebar and kept using them. The backlight is dimmable. It's not too loud. Except for space, there is no exposed spring under the keycaps. If desired, the keys pop out with little effort.
