I have a freshwater aquarium with an overflow filter. I use this mat as the first to come into contact with water. I have easy access to change or wash the pillow. They collect a lot of garbage and should be changed every few days. Keeps water crystal clear without charcoal. So my advice is if you can use it where it's easy to get, use it as your first filter. If not, it will still work as a second or third (or fourth) filter, but probably won't make the water as clean. I hope you find it…
