Cheap putty is used, not just chalk.

My 2 year old son broke the tip of a colored pencil. The inside is filled with cardboard or wood or some other material that does not contain wax. I wish it was all shallow, but it isn't. Once the tip broke the entire crayon was unusable for my 2 year old son. He doesn't know how to tilt the crayon to paint, he just holds it upright and because there is some pen in it, he can't paint with the crayon anymore.

Hard to break and easy to hold - as advertised

After reading many reviews of various Crayola incarnations I decided on this one for my 16 month old daughter. She might be a bit too young for them - she seems far more interested in tossing them out of the box and then putting them back in than actually painting with them. They took a few hits on our tile floor though without breaking, they're a good size for her little hands and she still enjoys them even if she doesn't use them as is. intended for use. Five stars for that. It comes with aโ€ฆ

They really don't break

My son is 15 months old and loves to paint when he can find a pen or pencil. So I have this. I was looking for something that I knew wouldn't break and pose a potential choking hazard to my son. He's not very gentle with these crayons and they hold up VERY well! They also wipe down (with a baby wipe) any surfaces he might draw on (matte phone screen, glass table top, high chair top), he hasn't gotten to the walls yet (hope he won't!), so I can't do that to say. I was really hoping to findโ€ฆ

First stop on a child's art education journey!

An ideal starting point for children's creativity. We got this for a baby when she was 14 months plus a large drawing pad and she loves it. "Wow!" she exclaims, drawing a pencil across the paper and a line appears. I think it's pretty amazing when you see it for the first time! Be sure to get some pads โ€” you don't need crayons on the walls until you've replaced the matte finish with some washable Sherwin Williams. :) One note: the box falls apart quickly so consider getting a box to keep it inโ€ฆ

A good start for children with fine motor skills

I bought these crayons a while back to practice coloring with our son who currently has a long list of global development diagnoses. Delays and some severe fine motor problems. For him, this area is one of the most difficult, and I think that's why he particularly dislikes it. When we finally got him to imitate doodles with his sister's old crayons, we wanted to give him new ones of ours. The larger size was important to him because it was easier for him to hold the start.
