Description of ๐ŸŽจ Daniel Smith Hand Poured Watercolor Blues Set: 6 Half Pans, 9 Empty Pans, Plastic Travel Case (16 Pieces) - 285650004

Following in the DANIEL SMITH Tradition of manufacturing the finest, handcrafted paints and products, our pans are HAND POURED. Hand Pouring pans is incredibly labor intensive and offers the purest form of professional watercolor half pans.Made In The USA,Professional Artists Quality Watercolors,Highest Pigment Load, Re-Wets Quickly. You can fill the 9 included empty half pans with your other DANIEL SMITH Watercolors (hint-be sure to label the pan) and store them in the plastic travel case too!. DANIEL SMITH Sleeping Beauty Turquoise Genuine (PrimaTek): A unique and vibrant blue, the gemstone comes from Sleeping Beauty Mountain in Arizona where we found a deposit that lives up to our high expectations. It is lightfast and permanent, with none of the transient color fade that plagues most turquoise. Turquoise has a unique porous nature that produces granular washes. Juicy washes flow from the brush and drybrush work has the intense texture found only in a mineral pigment. DANIEL SMITH Cerulean Blue: Cerulean Blue as a cleaner, brighter and slightly warmer alternative to Cerulean Blue Chromium. A bit less green, itโ€™s a truer blue that will be a versatile component of any palette. DANIEL SMITH Lunar Blue: The fabric of the night sky glides off the brush in this heavenly shade. Granulating lunar black floats above a phthalo undertone, perfect for capturing a moonlit sky. Inky as midnight, or diffused as the moon on water, semi-transparent Lunar Blue lifts beautifully, leaving behind a mere shadow of itself. This moody watercolor is sure to delight. DANIEL SMITH Indigo: Transparent, yet high in tinting strength, Indigo leaves a gentle faded blue denim stain when blotted from a damp state paint. Use Indigo wherever dusty purples are desired. Try flowing short strokes of Indigo into water, add touches of Sepia and Quinacridone Burnt Orange to create branches and birch trees. DANIEL SMITH Sodalite Genuine (PrimaTek): This inky color granulates and creates a three-dimensional quality as it dries. DANIEL SMITH Payneโ€™s Blue Gray: Perfect for painting dark, stormy skies, nightscapes, and for quickly darkening most other colors.

Disappointed

I'm disappointed in this Daniel Smith palette. I returned it. The pots and palette are overpriced compared to the quality. I will continue to buy tubes and make my own palette. However, Hyatt's is a great place to shop for art supplies.

Pros
  • DANIEL SMITH Genuine Sleeping Beauty Turquoise (PrimaTek). The unique light blue gem comes from the Sleeping Beauty Mountain in Arizona where we have found a deposit that lives up to our high expectations. It is fade resistant and long lasting without the temporary fading found on most turquoise. Turquoise has a unique porous nature that creates grainy washes. Succulent strokes flow from the brush, and the dry brushwork has an intense texture only found in mineral pigments.
Cons
  • I don't remember but there was something

The Most Beautiful Pigments Ever

I find these colors are best used for clear applications. An attempt at a denser opacity was unsuccessful, perhaps because I applied the paint too thickly. The pigments are extraordinarily brilliant. I love Daniel Smith products.

Pros
  • DANIEL SMITH Cerulean Blue: Cerulean Blue is a cleaner, brighter and slightly warmer alternative to Cerulean Blue Chromium. Slightly less green but a truer blue that will become a universal part of any palette. DANIEL SMITH Lunar Blue: The stuff of the night sky glides off the brush in this celestial hue. Grainy lunar blacks float atop a phthalo undertone perfect for capturing the lunar sky. Deep like midnight or diffuse like the moon on the water - the translucent Lunar Blue opens beautifully, leaving only a shadow. You will surely like this atmospheric watercolor.
Cons
  • A newer model could have been chosen

Good for sampling their blues some of which are expensive in pipes.

This set is completely blue. While this shouldn't be considered a standalone set (they expect you to fill in the empty spaces with whatever colors you have), only blue can be used for painting. This is a good example of what Daniel Smith has to offer in the form of blues not typically included in the set. Typically, pan sets come with phthalo blue, ultramarine, and sometimes a terribly runny Prussian blue, which luckily isn't included in this set. While any color can create a monochrome imageโ€ฆ

Pros
  • You can fill the 9 empty molds with other DANIEL SMITH watercolors (tip: be sure to label the container) and store them in the plastic travel case!
Cons
  • boring packaging
