Type of review

Apparently the ingredient in this paint, Quinacridone Gold, is very difficult to obtain making it difficult to source. But after much Googling I found it on Daniel Smith's website, ordered it and it was delivered within a few days. However, when I opened the box, the item sent was not what I ordered. I emailed them immediately, received a very friendly response within 12 hours and the end of the story is that I now have the right product and used it for the oil painting stain. The results are…

Pros
  • Uniform drying time and surface appearance
Cons
  • Not sure

The feedback system is confusing; This is a good product

It can be VERY confusing that Revain groups all Daniel Smith paints into reviews so you will see reviews of many different paints, oils, acrylics and watercolors all on the same one List. For example, I am writing this review for the Minnesota Pipestone Oil Color 37ml, but you will also see this in reviews of all other Daniel Smith products, resulting in a sluggish 3 star fountain pen that doesn't really help. For what it's worth, this oil paint is GOOD. The color of the pipette stone is dark…

Pros
  • Made in USA
Cons
  • Expensive

Natural lapis lazuli and natural malachite

This less expensive natural ultramarine (lapis lazuli) from Daniel Smith is not from Afghanistan (which is a more expensive clear blue form). This is a dark ash blue that is still very useful for glazing and dropping colors for shadows. I use it quite often. Keep in mind that the pigment distribution in real ultramarine is uneven (and varies in size), resulting in more refraction of light in the glaze than in synthetic ultramarine (whose pigments are very uniform and therefore less refractive).

Pros
  • Translucent
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.
