Ordered size 4 for my 3 year old who is pretty average. He likes the prints on it as he loves superheroes, especially Batman. The material is a bit stiffer than another pair of boxer shorts (Trimfit) I recently ordered, even after washing. He hasn't worn them yet so I can't comment on their fit or comfort but they are very similar in size to other boxers he has worn.

They fit our average 5 year old perfectly. The legs don't fit him snugly at all and he likes the feel and the way they sit on top of him. We've had them since Christmas. They also withstand multiple washings very well. I bought these for my son who is a size 4. I previously bought him a size 4 but they were too big and loose on him. Meanwhile, 4T is too tight. I don't know why as I think the 4T and 4 should be about the same size but at the time he just didn't have comfortable underpants.
