Dorman 38531 Tailgate Cable Review

Well the tailgate cable itself was excellent but I'm not sure what the person was thinking as they pocketed the pucks. One had a metal disc and the other had metal and plastic discs but two of them didn't even fit. The ones in my truck were so old I couldn't use them anymore. It doesn't matter, but don't throw random pucks. I would still buy it again as the 'same' (bouncer) product is more than double the price in the Autozone for two.

These cables are perfect for our 2002 Tacoma. Easy to fit and I only used small adjustable pliers and a flat head screwdriver to loosen the odd studs/screws. My old Toyota truck broke the tailgate cable. I have two cables. Arrived in 2 days as expected. It includes new screws and washers. Fits and looks like original equipment. Installation took less than 5 minutes by simply removing the old screw and cable and replacing with new screws/washers. Including Teflon seal. Being able to do it myself and not being mechanical by nature, I think I saved money by not having a mechanic do it for me. Hope lasts until the first cable. Looks and works the same…

Cable fits well. A good product. I've noticed comments from other reviewers about the cable trying to slip into the gap on the taillight housing and preventing the tailgate from closing. The instructions on the box to bend the cable into a "U" shape solved the problem. Also, I noticed that the package instructions say the large metal washer should be installed last. They fit and look like OE quality. No complaints. Do not attempt to remove old screws with a screwdriver or drill, punch or any other means. You will undress him.
