They work but not the best quality

I have a good quality awl that I use regularly but it's bound to be at the other end of my workshop when I need it so have I decided to try them and put them in different places in my store. I've been using a Kratzahle for years - it could be CS Osborne. My old workhorse feels solid and gives the impression of a quality tool even for such simple things. My old tool also works fine when I draw a line on leather. These Krat numbers are generally incomparable to anything. They definitely look…

Pros
  • Material: Metal with wooden handle
Cons
  • No paint required

Good for the money I think.

Quality control was not up to date. Some parts of the metal were rough. One was perfect so I got what I paid for. I often use it for splicing small hollow ropes. Others I use on the sewing machine to push the fabric out with the tip so the roughness doesn't matter.

Pros
  • Satisfied so far
Cons
  • Will write later

Not as sharp as pictured!

I wouldn't give it less than 5 stars because at this price you can't go wrong. I ordered these thinking the tips would be tapered to a needle point, but they are actually tapered at the tip, like a graphite pencil. I use them to first drill holes in wood for small screws that require precise placement. Good, just a little less pointy than I expected.

Pros
  • Very good value for money
Cons
  • Unbelievable price

Exactly what I needed. Compact awls for storage with my tool kits.

Overall I'm very satisfied. Fit and finish are good. My main use is to mark screw holes and start working on wood and wall panels. The awl's tapered profile also allows it to be used for centering/aligning. A note: the tip is not as sharp as a needle due to the coating. I have sharpened mine to best suit my purposes. Quite simply with a file. I'm happy with the result.

Pros
  • Great price
Cons
  • Big and bulky
