I bought one for a US Air Force cadet and he loves it. He loosened the screw and can carry the cards and block separately, but the cards and rite in the rain pad were perfect for the academy.

For such a price a good set of useful mapping aids, I was pleasantly surprised to receive a rite in the rain /esee branded notebook. The ability to separate the cards by removing the Chicago screw helps to use the cards on the card. Fits perfectly in my compass pocket next to the MC-G compass.

This kit is very navigation oriented and has very little survivability. But I think with proper navigation you don't have to worry too much about survival. However, it touches on the basics that are difficult to remember in stressful situations. Navigation maps are very useful and comprehensive. This set or something similar complements my set of navigational aids. Along with a map and a good compass. And finally a notepad that will come in handy than you think.
