Like all my other work hammers, I chose Estwing. First, it's an American production. Very high quality materials make them last a lifetime (my first was bought in 1981). This pickaxe is well balanced. It has a standard Estwing comfort grip that won't slip out of your hand when wet. I use it to split rocks and look for fossils. The pointed end is really sharp so be careful. I use it to scrape loose rocks out of mud or soft rock and loosen them easily. Buy a sheath or carry it in a bucket. Itβ¦
I'm not a rockhound at all, although I'd like to be! I bought this to go topaz hunting in the Texas Hill Country as my wife and I wanted to "separate the duties," we were talking about 14 or 22 oz. So I'm glad I went for the 22 oz. That's right, it was still very easy to handle and gives a lot more impact. This hammer has withstood all the hits a few novices could throw at it and more. Quality tool. Period. As soon as you feel it in your hands, just understand that you have a good tool in your hands. The weight is perfect and it feels comfortable in the hand. Probably the hardest part is NOT USING YOUR HEAD TO BREAK ROCKS. When you receive the tool, there is a sticker on it that specifically states not to use the pointed end to break rocks. It is intended for digging stones. Estwing also warns against using the end of the hammer to break rocks - it was designed to drive inβ¦
