Fairly easy to use

I have this with my Forney 140 magnet core and I love it. I've only used it twice and it did the job for me. I am not an experienced welder. I took a basic welding class last fall, which was basically just a pole, so I wanted to get my own little pole machine. I've used it with a 7018 and a 318 rod and it looks like I know what I'm doing so can't ask for more. I was very surprised at how well 318 stainless steel worked as I had never worked with stainless steel before.

Pros
  • DUTY CYCE- 80 amps at 30% for 120 volts; 180 amps at 25% for 230 volts
Cons
  • weak

it worked!: Welding & Soldering

I've never used a welder before but I always found I needed one. After much research I decided to start with MMA welding because it was the most compact and easiest for me After reading the Amazon customer reviews of the smaller Forney (st100) I figured I'd spend a little more and go for this model as it would allow me to weld heavier materials, use a thicker bar and have a slightly to have longer duty cycles I bought a mask, 7014 sticks, a set of jackhammer brushes and welding gloves. .After…

Pros
  • POWER - welds up to 1/2 inch mild steel - current range: 10-90 amps for 120 volts; 10-180 amps for 230 volts
Cons
  • out of fashion

Ideal for beginning welders and solderers

After some very frustrating trial and error years ago with a company welder and some 7018s I decided to give arc welding a try again. Deep water indeed. Needless to say, after that disaster with a thousand stuck rods, I turned down the opportunity to learn arc welding. Enter Forney 180ST. An absolutely phenomenal car. Don't get me wrong, it takes practice to start the arc effectively, but things are a lot easier with this welder's hot start feature. It took me about 30 minutes a day to practice

Pros
  • VERSATILITY - Easy Start makes every stroke easier and eliminates the hassle associated with stuck electrodes. DC Stick and TIG Welder
Cons
  • Crumpled Packaging
