Something like sticky gum is needed here. We have a chihuahua who is usually very afraid to run away. He is afraid of bags, boxes and child gates that we used. But since we did that he has no problem sticking his nose in the vertical slots/holes and shoving it out of the way. He's not the smartest of dogs, but he had the guts and intelligence to find out.
