In my opinion these are the best charcoal pencils on the market today. I have been using Derwent and Conte for many years but their quality has deteriorated to the point of being unusable. This is a premium pen from General. They turned out to be a great option - like all soft charcoal pencils, the tips break off easily. Using a utility knife may be your best bet. I still reach for the utility knife to get stuck while honing my sharpeners. I tried three different brands of wire: Derwent, Creatacolor 5.6mm with separate holder and this one. Using a craft knife might be the best bet, I find myself reaching for a craft knife only to get stuck pulling my sharpeners anyway.
