Update firmware.

I only use it to drive a Wheelock TB-593 loud bell in a machine shop on a ring cluster, but it puts out enough power for mechanical bells. The factory still ships them with some of the early firmware, so be sure to follow the instructions on their website and keep them up to date. I found this easy and set up my HT-802 based on the VoIP.ms wiki. I have programmed port 2 for call service/autodial for a Bogen ADP1 intercom that I may be able to install. It's a lot cheaper than a $600 SIP intercom

Pros
  • Easy setup
Cons
  • Only available in black

I suspect most people who buy this (or something similar) will want to get their hands a little dirty and be some sort of handyman. I fall into that category and knew what I was getting as I had an earlier machine (HT402) many years ago. This is definitely not a Vonage/Ooma/etc experience. plug and play However; If you're willing to do a little research/experiment, or if you're lucky enough to have a VoIP provider detailing the settings for this device for you, this is a great device withโ€ฆ

Works well for the voice line

Took forever to set up. But in the end I prevailed. The problem is not only with GrandStream, but also with VOIP.ms. Voice calls have been running without problems for several weeks. Sending a fax on line 2. Inbox works great. Outgoing calls sometimes drop out. Again, this is related to VOIP.ms, and it's just as likely (or more likely) that it's their service than the device causing the problems. I'm relatively sure that it would be easier and more reliable with T38.fax as the provider. Butโ€ฆ

This is an educational project, not a commercial product

This item should not be labeled as a product. It contains very good ideas and can be very helpful. Unfortunately, it wasn't finished and was put on the shelf too soon. In my opinion there is a big difference between an academic project and a commercial product. In an academic project you only have to implement your ideas, all users are people who know how to use them. In a commercial product, all this work should be done for your customer, the product should not crush, lock up, or cause systemโ€ฆ

But it is still too early for an assessment.

Recently received and installed Grandstream GS-HT802 adapter for newly activated VOiP service, so far so good. I was concerned that voice quality, latency, and other issues might make a difference, but it turned out to be as good, if not better, than any home telecom service I've dealt with in the past. The GS HT802 along with the VoIP service I recently subscribed to, 1-VoIP (no shill here) combined with AT&T Network 1Gb Fiber is the bomb! In the case of 1-VoIP, their support team has beenโ€ฆ

Great ATA for use with Rotary phones

I've been using the Grandstream H502 for 10+ years to set up my home phone when it suddenly started to drop out and was adding a lot of static noise to the line. The HT802 was a natural replacement as one of my requirements was compatibility with rotary phones. You can enable support for disc dialing and strong ringer via the configuration web interface. With both of these options enabled, I find it works great with both my modern cordless phones and my old Western Electric disc players. I find

  • Something about it

  • Minor issues

A great cheap landline option if you're a little tech savvy

This is a great little device that doesn't try to make life easier for users as it offers a wide range of options. It works great with my two heavily discounted VOIP providers, Anveo and Future-nine, giving me do-it-yourself landlines for less than $100 a year. Of course, if you want the reliability of a standard landline phone, you'll need to hook up that device, router, and modem to a UPS, but again, that's a modest upfront cost compared to the monthly cost of most full-service counterpartsโ€ฆ
