🔧 Helicoil 5528-8: Efficient 0.5-20 Inch Fine Thread Repair Kit Review

Not suitable for repairing steel oil pan drain plugs. This is because oil leaks around the coil insert, and if your sump isn't completely sealed BETWEEN the drain plug head and the sump surface below (which it usually isn't), the plug will often drip quickly.

Uses a 70 year old carburetor fuel inlet thread repair kit. Worked great! Otherwise I would have had to shell out a few bucks to replace the entire carburetor air horn, if not all. It is highly recommended that you use a drill press or drill bit holder to ensure the hole you drill is straight for the spiral to fit properly.

I was very skeptical about using it because I couldn't imagine how thread on thread would make the job easier, but it fixed my cleaned oil drain hole very well. I've tried just using the faucet before and it came right back up, but this was a permanent fix. We strongly recommend checking that you have or are ordering the bit that you need to use with this coil bobbin kit.

This kit is a fine pitch repair kit and requires the use of a prewinder. The spiral insert must be screwed in tightly, otherwise it will not fit into the threaded hole. The supplied Helicoil "pre-roller" is unusable and the instructions are vague. I ended up returning this kit and bought the EZ-Lok inserts which worked great. There are better alternatives when you need to repair a stripped 1/2x20 thread.
