Canner's Friend fits colanders and food strainers

My old one broke at the handle/skimmer joint from just getting soldered on. This one has small rivets so it feels much stronger. Also, this is your basic "jelly skimmer" which has a very, very fine mesh. It's almost opaque when you hold it up to the light. Although it's a bit smaller in diameter than my old one, IMHO it's an asset for getting rid of those pesky bubbles from the crooked side of the pan. If you're making jelly or jam, you need it. And that's good.

Pros
  • Crossing my fingers
Cons
  • Neutral

Less than a dozen uses and it's rubbish 😟

I have to say I liked the weight and balance of this skimmer. However, when I received it I realized it wouldn't last long as there were only two posts that seemed to "hold" the mesh screen by the handle. There were no solder points, and the ends of the pins from the handle weren't flared to hold the screen. It was only a matter of time. Of course, I was in the middle of a meal when this failed. I think if I had a soldering iron I could fix it, but I've learned my lesson.

Great washable filter!

I know they are skimmers and doing a great job. But in this house we use it to catch bits of bacon when we pour bacon grease into a jar. We also use this when making ghee at home, no other things needed. This is the only cookware we've ever needed and it works great for the job we need it for. Best of all, we don't buy disposable items like gauze to use once for filtering. It does its job perfectly - no problems. If you're on a diet that requires certain fixed oils to be cooked and/or stored…

Pros
  • Lots of positive emotions
Cons
  • No achievement

Well made and a great addition to the kitchen.

. When you do things that require a fine sieve. I've recently started making ghee (search for it) and used a spoon to skim the solids off the surface during cooking, then passed the butterfat through a 4-ply cheesecloth sieve. This spoon was such an improvement that I didn't really need the cheesecloth (I used it anyway, but there was very little effort). It also worked very well to remove fat from chilled homemade chicken soup - skimmers on most of them and all the pieces on this one. Cleaning

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly

Off label use - kitchen and food

I am a mead maker (fermented honey drink). I don't boil honey, I pasteurize it so that impurities rise to the surface in the form of thick foam. I used to try to skim off the foam with wooden spoons, ladles and spatulas. I either skip a lot of the foam or end up taking off some real honey. A friend recommended using a fat skimmer. I've used it many times since purchasing it and it works great. Cooked honey goes straight through the strainer, which is dense enough to hold the foam. I was able to
